With an estimated net worth of $5.8 billion, 94-year-old Annette Lerner and her family, which owns the Washington Nationals, as well as Lerner Enterprises in Rockville, are the most wealthy in Maryland, the new report states, though they are being rapidly approached by other moguls in Maryland.
According to the report, "Lerner Enterprises is among the largest owners of real estate in the Washington, DC area" following Ted Lerner's death in February last year, when the assets went to his family.
The Lerners - while not hurting for much - came in as the 225th richest family in America, a list that was headed by X owner Elon Musk ($244 billion), Amazon head Jeff Bezos ($197 billion), Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg ($181 billion), Larry Ellison ($175 billion), and Warren Buffet ($150 billion).
In Maryland, the Lerners were followed by:
- Real estate investor Mitchell Rales: $5.1 billion (256th overall);
- Former Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder: $4.5 billion (299th);
- Allegis Group co-founder Jim Davis: $4.3 billion (319th);
- Carlyle Group co-founder David Rubenstein: $3.7 billion (359th).
According to Forbes, the top 400 richest people in America are worth a record-setting $5.4 trillion, up nearly a full trillion dollars from last year, and the list includes a dozen boasting 12-figure fortunes.
There were nearly two dozen newcomers who made their way into the ranking, which was highlighted by the usual suspects.
"Admission to this elite club is pricier than ever: A minimum net worth of $3.3 billion is required, up $400 million since 2023," researchers noted.
"(They have) grown their fortunes in everything from mundane plastic pipes to cutting-edge artificial intelligence."
